Nor is there uniformity of background among all twenty-two of them. Not all had a liberal arts background; not all put the same emphasis on the centrality of the liberal Protestant tradition.

They remained committed to the nineteenth-century evangelical impulse that had shaped their childhoods, participating in a variety of voluntary organizations. Most remained active members in one of the mainline churches, and many were ordained ministers. Generally from small-town central and eastern Canada, they received their bas predominantly in Canada and then went on to postgraduate work in Canada, the United States, or England.
But punishment or repression was usually a last resort. Much more common was the attempt to shape the proper development of Canadian students through education: to instil in students a particular vision of the world. 2 Administrators could achieve this goal through the creation of a Christian moral atmosphere on campus. Christian beliefs and values pervaded, implicitly or otherwise, every facet of campus life.
